Save the balloons, Get Me New Tubes. Or Zoot Shoes.

Doing homework in the dining hall I tuned Nicole's (The saint who makes my omelets) conversation with another dining hall worker: "I've been married to the same damn man for 26 years. Cut the crap. I don't need yo chocolate. I don't need yo balloons. I don't need yo cards. Get me some power tools. I need a damn saw." Kudos to this woman. I feel the same way. I HATE when people give me chocolate and candy. You KNOW I won't eat it. I'll regift it, give it to B, or it'll just sit and stale on my shelf. I mean unless you bought it for me so I give it back to you so you can eat it. You sly dog. Or when my mom gives me spa kits as presents. She does this almost every year - think she's hinting at something? What the hell am I going to do with aloe gel socks when my calluses are too thick for it to even penetrate to my throbbing muscles? And the last time I tried to trim my nail buds resulted in layers of gauze and a trash can full of bloody tiss...

Tough Love

I allow myself ONE wallow in self pity/self loathing/hate the world/cry myself to sleep day per year. This year I gave myself two, okay, one and a half. But it's over and done with and the end of it could not have come sooner. Thank God it came at the beginning of the year - it's all downhill from here! After yesterdays little episode I did nothing but drag myself through the day. I slept through my alarm and didn't swim this morning, sat in bed and considered not going to lab, went to lab (duh, who do you think I am?), highly considered not going to my discussion, didn't go to my discussion, went to FitRec and ran 2 miles, gave up on that, kind of ate...but really gave up on that too. Went to Dunkin' with the intent of getting coffee, walked in the door and forgot why I was there, thought about walking to the lab, then took the T. The lab went well, basically I'm coming to find out "research assistant" turns into "woman get me coffee and go throu...

K Capacity

In nature, if there are unlimited resources, no disease and no predation, an organism's population will grow at an exponential rate until the resources run out. At this point the growth rate levels off and the death/birth rate are equal, so the population density remains constant, also known as the "K", or carrying capacity. On February tenth, 2010, I've reach my (ironically enough) "K" level. This entire day has been nothing but a series of crashes and burns, starting off with this angry Russian man burning my omelette - where the HELL was Nicole this morning? The ONLY, and I mean only, upside to my day was being the only person in my phonetics class to get a 100% on my last test, but damn straight I earned that damn A. I had an 8 am class, 10 am volunteer study lounge hours, 11 am class, and a noon class. I went straight to finish off my study lounge hours until 2, only finding out BU cancelled class. YES!! BANK!! I LOVE WHEN CLASS IS CANCELLED!!! Oh. Wait...

Again with the Pussy, but this time it's context appropriate

Just this year the quad (Al, Anya, B and I) have acquired a rather shallow taste in music - or, at least, our party music. With catchy lines such as, "it's time for me to put my pussy on your side burns" and, "Oh yes I love her like pussy, money, weed", who wouldn't get hooked? In the beginning of the year, okay well now, too, it's Lady Gaga, or more commonly referred to as just GaGa. We're on a nickname basis. Bad Romanc e , Disco Stick , and Poker Fac e made the cut for the top three songs. Then it came Keisha, oh wait no, it's Ke$ha...we call her Keisha...but a friend just recently informed me it's Kesha (inspired by Kashi cereal?) Anyway. That trashy chick with the hipster/NYC look who likes to brush her teeth with whisky. Yeah, we like her song about clocks and Mick Jagger. And our recent obsession? (And I mean, obsession. As in we played this song literally every 2 minutes all night on Sunday. I ate to this song. Studied to this song. ...

Wanted: Space.

Is it just me, or is the world closing in? The US has one of the highest population growth rates in industrialized countries, averaging about .89% (according to the United States Census Bureau), with nearly 25% of the population being under the age of 20. I feel like the entire growing population is concentrated right here in Boston. Actually, right here next to me as I watch this awkward Asian slowly close in on my study space. This seems to be a re-occurring theme with me: losing space. This is the second time some awkward little Asian has decided to move in on my domain and invite himself to sit at my table. The first time was at breakfast right before an exam (PS. why is it scarring dining hall experiences always occur right before a stressful exam?) I was eating my omelette, minding my own business reading my notes and he just sits right down at my table. Right down across from me. And eats his eggs in silence. It's like he didn't even notice I was there. Umm...hi??? Ther...

Smooth Moves in Phonetics

So I'm in my favorite class (Phonetics) on this dreary of a mundane Wednesday morning running on five hours of not-so solid sleep and my brain is dead from studying the works of Mill, Marx, Schopenhauer, Shelley, and Freud (Curse philosophers. By the way, one of those is not like others, I'll leave you to figure out which one.) I spilled coffee on my hand at Starbucks, my contacts are sticking to my eyelids, and some one took my favorite front row, middle seat. I have a long day ahead of me, which includes God forsaken track practice and my ever favorite philosophy class (curse philosophers again.) It is definitely not a happy hump day and, all things considered, I'm not on my A game. I'm not even on my B game. And if there were a C game, I bet I'd be absent from that one too. In fact, I got lost on the way to the ball park. So we're learning Phonetic transcription, duh. And we were practicing our voiceless lingua alveolar fricatives...also known as the S sound....

Kind of makes you want to wake at dawn and run

Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must outrun the fastest lion, or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows that it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve. It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or a gazelle, when the sun comes up...you better be running.
