That college thing I did

Once again I'm sorry for ignoring you, my small but loyal fanbase. I've been blogging a lot in Henry's Blog  - not because I prefer it over my own blog, but because it's a lot easier to write about Henry eating dead chipmunks than to write about graduating college.
Soooo graduating college....college graduation....college graduate.
Yeah, I actually don't have much to say. I came, I studied, I conquered.
My college career actually has rather nice bookends: Mom and dad drove me with all my stuff from Saint Louis to Boston in a trailblazer, and now, 4 years later, mom and dad are driving me from Boston to Saint Louis in a trailblazer. I love things that come full circle!

So instead of getting all sappy and talking about how much I learned and how much I love my friends and how much I'm going to miss college...

I thought I would compile a list of things I never thought I would do in college that I did:
1. Compete in 20+ triathlons
2. Go to collegiate triathlon nationals twice
3. Complete 2 marathons
4. Complete 2 half-marathons
5. Buy a $2,500 road bike/start cycling
6. Switch my major to Speech Pathology
7. Go to graduate school straight out of undergrad
8. Move to New Hampshire and work on a farm
9. Buy a coonhound named Sir Henry
10. Meet a guy as wonderful and perfect as Chris (Sorry to be cheesy, but I like him a lot)
11. Have a random french roommate who ends up being one of my best friends
12. End up hating Boston
13. End up realizing I love the midwest - who knew!?
14. Get hit by a car - so pleased I fulfilled a life long dream of being on the receiving end of that one, brilliant!
15. Buy a wet suit - if you would have told me I would buy a wet suit in college my senior year of highschool, I would have called you a loon
16. Get an A in a math class - Okay it was an algebra/trig class and it was pretty much a joke, BUT IT COUNTS.
17. Learn to drive a manual jeep...through many trials and tears, it finally happened
18. Go to the hospital twice - once for getting hit by a car and once for apparently no reason at all, but my tummy really hurt!
19. Completely change groups of friends about 3 times, and finally end up with the best group a girl could ask for, her very own triathlon team. They were there all along, I just needed to realize how much they all meant to me. And then there's Julbug, my very closest friend of all, who kind of came around by accident/walking many miles to class. The best friendships come out of nowhere!
20. Meet an English girl named Kristy at summer camp, stay in contact with her for 3 years, then have her come visit me from Europe for 2 weeks. I had no idea this kind of friendship was so rare because it came so easy, but turns out a lot of people don't keep in contact for people for years after they meet then randomly come visit! Then be asked to be a bridesmaid in her wedding - can't wait to put on my dress robes and practice my spells at her reception! WINGARDIUMMMM LEVIOSA!!!

Things I thought I would do in college that I didn't do:
1. Learn to cook - 22 and still have no idea! That's an accomplishment.
2. Go to Europe, or at least anywhere outside the U.S....yeah, still working on that one. I hear Utah is pretty exotic, though.
3. Live off campus - move out of BU dorms? I don't think so.
4. Live at home again

So turns out that my list that I did do is a LOT longer than the list I thought I would do that I didn't do.  Talk about jumping ship and leaving the nest!

Okay, off for a bikeride.

Love love love,
me

Stop Shoulding all over yourself

Yesterday I went on Cor Jesu's Vivare "young alumni" retreat. My friend from high school Katie posted it on my wall a few weeks ago and tagged a couple other CJ sisters to the post and it struck my interest. I haven't done a single thing with CJ since I graduated and somewhere between moving to Boston and joining the triathlon team my Catholic past was put on the backburner. I figured I had nothing to lose except a Saturday and at the very least I'd get to hang out with my friends so I signed up and sent in my $25 without much thought.  I've never been the most devout Catholic. Most times in church I'm scanning the crowd for familiar faces, zoning out, and making Target lists- and that's if I go at all. Sunday is usually run-day...or ski day. Or sleep in day. Or study day. Or vacuum day. Whatever day it is...it's rarely church day. Despite being raised by two Catholic parents, going to a Catholic grade school and a Catholic high school, going o...

A Near Miss

I may have spoken too soon when I said that Kirkwood library was my spot. Here I am comfortably doing my speech-pathology work when out of nowhere: We took the square route of this and put it here and here and put it there and there.  My ears tuned in and I raised my head. I sniffed the air and suspiciously scanned the area. Yep. Math. Immediately I broke out in a sweat. Hands started shaking. Eyes twitched. Jaw clenched and neck twisted. Vomit literally came up my esophagus. Pavlov conditioning in it's purest form.  So this times this gives you this and this times this gives you that.  Focus, Katie. Hmm....a 2 year old with hearing loss who is struggling with some final consonant deletion, some stopping of fricatives, some devoicing? Now that, I am good at.... Now do you see inside your parenthesis that there is a difference of squares? No I don't see, lady. That past is long behind me and I'm never going back.  Right now I'm transcribing, identifying ...
First mountain bike ride = SUCCESS! Rex and I rode 18 miles this morning. We did the Logan river trail for about 14 then we rode around town stopping into some bike shops looking at pedals and mountain biking shoes. It'll be a few weeks before I actually buy a pair but I want to get an idea of what's out there - just like road cycling, clipless pedals change everything. With regular pedals, the rider can only get movement forward by pushing down. With clipless pedals, the rider's foot is attached to the bike so you can push down and pull up, which makes climbing and accelerating completely different. I absolutely love my pedals on Mr. Mac so Rex should have a pair, too. The ride was awesome though. The thing I like about mountain biking is that it's a nice blend between trail running and road cycling. You get to the distance of cycling but you get to be close with nature like you do running. It's absolutely perfect. I even had my very first crash today! I w...
