Alright, so I can finally tell you guys what I was talking about a couple blog posts ago when I said exciting things were happening but I didn't wait to write about it yet!
Ready!?
It's official - I adopted a coonhound pup named Henry!
Henry is a 1 1/2 year old rescue from Tennessee. He was found wandering the streets/woods in January starved, emaciated, and crawling with fleas to the point where they thought he was going to die. He also had a lot of hair missing because he laid on concrete for days at a time. In the south, coonhounds are so common that they usually give them 2 days to be adopted in the pound before killing them, so there are some organizations that go to the south and bring them to other parts of the country for a chance at a better life. Ann from Northeast Coonhound rescue got Henry at the end of January and placed him in a foster home where he's been living the past couple months. Most dogs from this rescue get adopted within a couple weeks but for some reason Henry has stayed around. He's had a couple inquiries but no one wanted to commit to being his forever home - until I came along :)
Sir Henry the Great, as I dubbed him, in the best dog I've ever met. He can run sub-7 minute miles for at least 4 miles (as I found out Monday), he doesn't bark at mice (but he does get excited and look at me for directions on what to do, "Just say the word, mom, and I'll get him!") and doesn't bother with geese. He does go wild for squirrels though, but that's just instinct - who really likes squirrels anyway? He's getting so much better with other dogs - at first he freaked out but the more calm I am, the more calm he is. He's extremely regal, but then he gets tangled up in my backpack or hits his head on the table. He doesn't chew, mark his territory, or climb on furniture. He could care less about kids and doesn't look twice at shoes.
Basically, he can run for hours and then come home, curl up in the smallest ball you've ever seen, and nap all afternoon.
And he doesn't shed! Win!
So world, meet Henry the Great. I think he's going to be a fantastic training partner.
