Weekend

As promised, here's a blog about my weekend - I know you've been sitting on the edge of your rolly computer chair waiting for it with bated breath.
Friday after my guitar class, which went not-so-fabulously, as per usual, Chris and I had a little adventure to Harpoon Brewery where we met up with my ever beloved (and apparently much talked about) bff Dave. It took us a little adventuring and a little guessing to get there but we made it there and home with lots of "I have a hunch this is the way to go"-ing. It convinced me fully that we'd be great on a European back-packing trip together. We don't fight, we don't argue, we don't get frustrated, we just laugh and follow our gut. Which led us to beer! Isn't that what Germany is all about?
Anyway, Harpoon was awesome. You just go, hear about beer, and drink all you want. I picked up a growler of the cider - highly recommended.
We literally guessed what bus to get on to get home and turns out it led us straight to Gov. Center - another win!
After the brewery I went to Shaws and picked up lots of food/decorations for Julie's surprise engagement party, another awesome event (see video below).
I met some amazing girls, I knew they'd be awesome because they're Julie's friends but meeting them in person was just great. We had a blast setting up, getting to know eachother, and then giving Julie the biggest surprise of the year - besides her actual enagement, of course.
And then JULIE surprised US by saying she wanted to go out! So we dressed up and trumped off to White Horse where....

it was Deaf night out in Boston! An SLP's dream. We had the BEST time 'chatting' with the Deaf community making up a pseudo-sign language to communicate. We didn't stop laughing for 2 hours with people of all ages. And I, Katie Weller, ended up staying until bar closing. I know, I know. That's 2 am, for those who don't know. I had no idea I would have so much fun that night but me, Julie, her friends, and 3 Deaf men had a blast laughing at eachother's communication failures. I'm so happy we went out and I feel so blessed to have such an up close and personal experience with such great people, outside of the classroom. I even learned some signs.

The next morning I slept in, went to work, and then stayed in with Chris eating icecream and watching Modern Family. I woke up the next day and had a time trial at Landry's and ended up doing awesome - a whole minute faster than the last time I did it. The only semi-embarrassing part was that I was in a heat with all boys...so everyone except one other girl was finished before me. I hate that when you're the only one out there the announcer focuses solely on you - apparently he even made some puns with my name. Hilarious - really.
And then I got a huge bag of bagels and a glass cup, sweet.
That night I had my favorite members of the tri team over and we drank awesome beer, ate icecream, and drunkenly signed up for some triathlons (normal people things.) I'm so happy my teammates happen to be my best friends - it makes things so convenient.

My day off included a FREEZING bike ride with Chris and Nick, which was great to get out but I froze my a** off. BUT we used Chris' new GoPro camera I bought him which actually is very high quality - with sound, picture, and all. I'm so happy with it and can't wait to use it on more stuff. After my ride I ate a ton, played guitar, did math homework, and went to inventory. I was doing inventory at Citysports from 9-1 in the morning - ugh. But it went by fast because, like my teammates, I absolutely love my co-workers.

And that was my weekend. Good to catch up. And now, for your entertainment - my best pal Julie being ridiculous :)

Stop Shoulding all over yourself

Yesterday I went on Cor Jesu's Vivare "young alumni" retreat. My friend from high school Katie posted it on my wall a few weeks ago and tagged a couple other CJ sisters to the post and it struck my interest. I haven't done a single thing with CJ since I graduated and somewhere between moving to Boston and joining the triathlon team my Catholic past was put on the backburner. I figured I had nothing to lose except a Saturday and at the very least I'd get to hang out with my friends so I signed up and sent in my $25 without much thought.  I've never been the most devout Catholic. Most times in church I'm scanning the crowd for familiar faces, zoning out, and making Target lists- and that's if I go at all. Sunday is usually run-day...or ski day. Or sleep in day. Or study day. Or vacuum day. Whatever day it is...it's rarely church day. Despite being raised by two Catholic parents, going to a Catholic grade school and a Catholic high school, going o...

A Near Miss

I may have spoken too soon when I said that Kirkwood library was my spot. Here I am comfortably doing my speech-pathology work when out of nowhere: We took the square route of this and put it here and here and put it there and there.  My ears tuned in and I raised my head. I sniffed the air and suspiciously scanned the area. Yep. Math. Immediately I broke out in a sweat. Hands started shaking. Eyes twitched. Jaw clenched and neck twisted. Vomit literally came up my esophagus. Pavlov conditioning in it's purest form.  So this times this gives you this and this times this gives you that.  Focus, Katie. Hmm....a 2 year old with hearing loss who is struggling with some final consonant deletion, some stopping of fricatives, some devoicing? Now that, I am good at.... Now do you see inside your parenthesis that there is a difference of squares? No I don't see, lady. That past is long behind me and I'm never going back.  Right now I'm transcribing, identifying ...
First mountain bike ride = SUCCESS! Rex and I rode 18 miles this morning. We did the Logan river trail for about 14 then we rode around town stopping into some bike shops looking at pedals and mountain biking shoes. It'll be a few weeks before I actually buy a pair but I want to get an idea of what's out there - just like road cycling, clipless pedals change everything. With regular pedals, the rider can only get movement forward by pushing down. With clipless pedals, the rider's foot is attached to the bike so you can push down and pull up, which makes climbing and accelerating completely different. I absolutely love my pedals on Mr. Mac so Rex should have a pair, too. The ride was awesome though. The thing I like about mountain biking is that it's a nice blend between trail running and road cycling. You get to the distance of cycling but you get to be close with nature like you do running. It's absolutely perfect. I even had my very first crash today! I w...
