A to a B

After today's exam I've come to accept that I'm not the smartest girl at this University, but I'm not the dumbest, either! But the sign makes me laugh, so I'll leave it on the door anyway.
I definitely could have done better on Phonological Disorders today but this bout of senioritis is just overwhelming my good sense. There's no cure, so I'll just have to suffer through it and hope it clears up.
The good news is I've been in this major long enough and was smart enough to piece together past knowledge to at least pull off a B. Combined with attendance, my project, and the take home exam - whew! Grade = saved. I think I might even be able to still pull off a solid A in the class. Plus, I'm still riding on my good grades from last week - 92% on my horrid math exam and 94% on my Senior Seminar exam (also bs'd). I'm so good at this pseudo-studying thing! Why didn't I think of this earlier?
So what did I do yesterday instead of studying, you might ask?
Well, the day went a bit like this:
Supposedly I woke up at 5am when Chris rolled out of bed for PT, but I don't remember what I did or said, and apparently this happens a lot, so really my day actually started at 7:45 when I finally rolled my sleepy butt out of bed for my 9 am ever-hated math class. I ran around my room like a pigeon with its head chopped off searching for my ID and missed my ever-coveted morning walk with Julie - terrible start. After finding my ID ever-not-so conveniently located under a pile of study materials I made the definitive decision there was time for coffee before class. I went to dunken and they charged me the low rate of $1.98 for my coffee instead of the ususal $2.02 - curious how the price fluctuates with the day. It's been know to go as low as $1.75, but only when the short, dark haired girl works. When the big, grumpy black guy works, it's always $2.02. I think he charges me the extra 4 cents because I'm too perky in the morning.
Anyway.
I made the walk to my class alone, spilling coffee on my glove the whole way, as per usual. Good thing I invested in my designated "coffee gloves."Good for those mornings when you really need something between your skin and that scalding liquid.
I was in class ten minutes early despite my morning strug-fest. Funny how that always works out...
I was able to hide from my eastern european prof. that I did not, in fact, read the chapter and do the worksheets prior to class, by asking a lot of questions and pasting a "I totally understand this" face on. I should've been an actress. My face said "I got this!" My brain said, 'what the f**** mate?" My hand was doodling.
After class I ate breakfast, went home, played guitar, and was tickled pink at the fact that I finally strummed without sounding like absolute garbage. I was so excited that I made Chris come upstairs so I could show him my brilliance. I got a little too excited and tried to learn a new song.
Rode the fail whale.
Went back to practicing my old songs.
After realizing once again I'm no Santana, I had to unleash my frustration on something productive other than guitar.
Studying for my exam perhaps? Not a chance.
I put on my running shoes.
Instead of doing the 5 miles I planned, I did 8 - I put a detour in my route so I could run past not one, but two puppy parks. Both filled with dogs.
Jealous? Yes. Obsessed? Maybe. There's just something about a group of ten dogs sprinting around a field chasing a ball that is the most simple form of entertainment. So I always slow down a bit and try to avoid tripping as I watch.
I can't wait to get my two huskies.
So I completed my 8 mile run with pick-ups, averaging about 7:40 min/miles. Not bad for someone who is struggling with runner's knee...from too much running.
So obviously I had to eat again after running - recovery food, you know the drill. And shower. And dry my hair. And then fold my clothes covering my bed, which is why I have to keep sleeping at Chris' because I actually couldn't see my bed anymore.
Sitting at my desk I decided it was 3:00 and I definitely had to start studying. But then I got on the subject with a friend about Utah and Sunset Nachos and all their glory and what-not so I put it off a little longer.
And then Izzy came home and we had to catch up, because I haven't seen her since this morning and I missed her.
And then I decided to watching Notting Hill, because I had never seen it and that's a crime against Romantic Comedy/British humor movie lovers. Also, Julia Roberts is so clutch.
Oops - dinner time!
And THEN, and only then, was it study time. Kind of.
Until 10, when I went downstairs, hung out with Chris, watched part of a show with him, ate his Valentine's day candy, and then called it a day.
When I woke up at 6 am, studied, and passed the test.

And that is why, folks, I did not get a 100% on my exam.

Stop Shoulding all over yourself

Yesterday I went on Cor Jesu's Vivare "young alumni" retreat. My friend from high school Katie posted it on my wall a few weeks ago and tagged a couple other CJ sisters to the post and it struck my interest. I haven't done a single thing with CJ since I graduated and somewhere between moving to Boston and joining the triathlon team my Catholic past was put on the backburner. I figured I had nothing to lose except a Saturday and at the very least I'd get to hang out with my friends so I signed up and sent in my $25 without much thought.  I've never been the most devout Catholic. Most times in church I'm scanning the crowd for familiar faces, zoning out, and making Target lists- and that's if I go at all. Sunday is usually run-day...or ski day. Or sleep in day. Or study day. Or vacuum day. Whatever day it is...it's rarely church day. Despite being raised by two Catholic parents, going to a Catholic grade school and a Catholic high school, going o...

A Near Miss

I may have spoken too soon when I said that Kirkwood library was my spot. Here I am comfortably doing my speech-pathology work when out of nowhere: We took the square route of this and put it here and here and put it there and there.  My ears tuned in and I raised my head. I sniffed the air and suspiciously scanned the area. Yep. Math. Immediately I broke out in a sweat. Hands started shaking. Eyes twitched. Jaw clenched and neck twisted. Vomit literally came up my esophagus. Pavlov conditioning in it's purest form.  So this times this gives you this and this times this gives you that.  Focus, Katie. Hmm....a 2 year old with hearing loss who is struggling with some final consonant deletion, some stopping of fricatives, some devoicing? Now that, I am good at.... Now do you see inside your parenthesis that there is a difference of squares? No I don't see, lady. That past is long behind me and I'm never going back.  Right now I'm transcribing, identifying ...
First mountain bike ride = SUCCESS! Rex and I rode 18 miles this morning. We did the Logan river trail for about 14 then we rode around town stopping into some bike shops looking at pedals and mountain biking shoes. It'll be a few weeks before I actually buy a pair but I want to get an idea of what's out there - just like road cycling, clipless pedals change everything. With regular pedals, the rider can only get movement forward by pushing down. With clipless pedals, the rider's foot is attached to the bike so you can push down and pull up, which makes climbing and accelerating completely different. I absolutely love my pedals on Mr. Mac so Rex should have a pair, too. The ride was awesome though. The thing I like about mountain biking is that it's a nice blend between trail running and road cycling. You get to the distance of cycling but you get to be close with nature like you do running. It's absolutely perfect. I even had my very first crash today! I w...
