Blood on the streets of Naples

To date, I am a firm believer that the act of a cyclist falling down at a stoplight is one of upmost amusement. Absolutely nothing is funnier than an absolutely ripped cyclist, riding a carbon fiber bike thinking he's all badass in his racing jersey and white shoes and Rudy Project sunglasses, toppling over while at a dead stop. All too often I'm the person laying on her ass in the middle of the road. Granted, don't have white shoes (a privilage left to the speed demons), a carbon fiber bike (sigh), and I am nowhere near a badass, but I do have the scars to prove I have hopped, skipped, and jumped over those cyclist milestones. Today, while waiting for my fellow cyclist extraordinaire to awaken from her slumber, more like coma, I waited outside her gate of her condo. After only about two minutes I realized, hey Katie, you're in the middle of the road and this is a potentially problematic situation. Being the avid problem solver I am, I chose the efficient route of clip...

Pleasing Knees

Remember that letter I wrote to my stabbing, throbbing, sharp, firing knee pain? Well, I think it did just the trick! Last night around 8 I got really restless and crabby, as I always do when I don't have at least two hours of training a day - I think I just get a ton of negative energy built up. Anyway, so finally got fed up with the ATP build up in my body and I decided it was about time to get my body through some fermentation cycles. It was too dark to cycle and too cold to swim so I had one last option: running. For the past two months the mere thought of running makes me weak in the knees - and not in a good way. So fully decked out in spandex and hoodie (because it was 45 out...in Florida...what bull) and running shoes strapped on I prepared myself for a complete trainwreck of a run which would probably result in a walk, a limp, and a call to my sister for a pick up. As usual the first steps were a little testy, the pain still there in sharp little spasms. Frustrated, I got ...

Dr. Jones Isn't Happy with me

Not that sitting in spandex for an hour and a half isn't comfortable or anything but honestly, I can't get my ass motivated to sit on Dr. Jones. So here I am, I'm on my second bowl of cereal, my new bike computer hasn't moved since I set it down to "get a quick bite before heading out", and the Doctor is sitting stationary, probably wondering why he's in a closet and not locked to my bed...and probably cussing me out because he's been there for over 24 hours. But who can get motivated when you're in Florida, it's 50 degrees out and the wind is enough to knock you off your bike - thank God I never invested in disc wheels. In addition to all these problems, I didn't bring one piece of winter cycling gear with me, not even a pullover! Now I know all you cyclists who are braving the 5 degree weather up on the East coast are loathing my very existence right now, but if it's any consolation I'm loathing mine too. I hate days when I just c...

Paging Doctor Weller - which one?

I have increasing anxiety about my career choice, or lack thereof. I apologize for just throwing that out there without any cute opening about dogs or knee problems, but I can't think of any other way to say it. When, okay if, I do, or choose to, grow up and settle down (Like that's ever going to happen) there is a very small chance I will actually stick to one path. I'm too fickle. You see how picky I am about my running shoes, and they only go on my feet. Imagine how I'm going to be in six years. When I turned twenty I had a very small anxiety attack. In a sad attempt to comfort me, a friend said, "Just think Katie! In the next ten years you'll have a career, a house, probably a husband, maybe a kid..." Just hearing that made me throw up in my mouth a little bit, in fact I think I did. Needless to say that was the last time I went to that friend for comfort. I've always been the type of girl that gets what she wants. Not because it's been handed ...

Alright I lied again, I have more to say.

This little nugget of thought just popped into my head as I was about to sign off, so long 1 a.m. bed time it was nice to almost meet your acquaintance. I'm sure we would have been great friends, or at least casual business partners. I really need to stop referring to inanimate objects and nouns like that. I don't want to be like my sister. Did you know she's 26 years old and talks to her stuffed penguin? "Oh Mister Penguin I am so sorry you got knocked off the bed last night. Were you cold on the floor? It will not happen again, I promise." or "Now Doctor Jones you take care of my Katie now. We don't need her crashing or disappearing to Captiva again." Endearing, really. Anyway, the topic I would really love to discuss is why women say no when they really want to say yes. Okay maybe not women, maybe its just me. No, actually, it can't be just me. Have you ever wondering why, when women are offered another dessert or the last slice of pizza, they...

In case you were wondering, I'm alive.

Oh hey, how's it going? I'm fine thanks...I know it's been a while. Sorry I haven't returned your calls. Been really busy with work, school, family, and my sock drawer. No, no it's not you, it's me. You're just too good for me. You're intimidating and successful, why would you be interested in me? Oh wait, silly me, I thought I was a guy for a second. Now that that's over. Okay, so I know it's been a while, I beg forgiveness from the bottom of my heart - it's been known to be a little cold and cynical, but my cardiovascular fitness level is right up there with Lance. So you know I mean well. I'm not going to go over the events since April. No, I bought a beautiful, leather bound expensive diary to do that. Okay, I lied, its not leather bound or expensive, it was $7.99 at Borders. Regardless, I DO have a nice gel pen that flows lightly over the page in the way that only jelly roll can do, so I like writing it in a lot more than typing. In ...

Oldies but Goodies

Sitting in my dorm surrounded by boxes I can't believe it's really over. Yesterday my dad was hanging my cork boards on the wall and today I'm taking them off. Saying goodbye to my parents back in September wasn't even hard - I didn't even cry, maybe because I knew I was going to be okay. Little did I know I would be so much better than okay. I had no idea what I was in for walking back into the dorms with no one beside me and tomorrow when I walk out I'm happier than I could have ever imagined. The single best thing that happened to me this year was meeting my sisters, I literally can't even begin to explain how these three girls have changed me. I've never had such a connection with three other people. It's amazing to know that no matter what happens to me these girls have my back. They are my absolute everything and the rest of my life they are going to be my rocks. I've heard about creating your own family, but I never knew what it truly mean...
