21

I was doing so good with blogging until this little event called my 21st birthday rolled around and now suddenly I don't remember anything!
Kidding...but not really.
This was by far the best birthday I've ever had. Not only did my very best friend from home fly in specifically to spend the week with me, but my other best friend took off work, my boyfriend's sister drove in from Western Mass, my other good friend drove in from home, and suddenly I found myself surrounded by all my favorite people in the world...which is more than enough as far as gifts go.
It started out on the 15th when Molly flew in. I was so nerve wracked all day - her flight didn't get in until 9 and I worked all day, it snailed by. The very first thing we do is get on the shuttle to take us to the T, and what do we do? We miss our stop.
"One more time around the airport, Louie!" A 1 minute shuttle ride to the other side of the terminal turned into 45 minutes - what a Molly/Katie thing to do.
After a far too long commute back to the apartment we waited until midnight, and promptly went to Sunset for my very first legal Margarita - amazing. We got chicken quesadillas and got a little tipsy off the best drinks in Boston. Then we went home and passed out - a perfect beginning.
I woke up the next morning, trained (of course) took my first shot at 9 am - awesome! And woke Molly up. We walked to get Ally and meet Emily and Davis and we all drove to the beach - after getting lost, of course.
Then I got the best delivery of all: cake and flowers from Chris. Not JUST cake...red velvet cake from Sweet, the best bakery in Boston. And not just any old roses...he got my lillies. Is he perfect? Absolutely.
Then of course I went on an alcohol run to Blanchards and spent well over $75 on various drinks - oops! It's my birthday nothing can go wrong.
After that everyone met up at my place and by this time I'm feeling pretty buzzed and well, lets just say I don't remember much after this...
I am informed that the night included eating tons of nachos, drinking a "mind eraser" margarita, falling off a fence (?), almost stealing a bike seat, trying to ride a bike (explains the HUGE bruise on my leg), dancing at a club, telling a black guy in front of me, "were on a bus, you sit. I stand." and also I told him to go pick me some cotton - thank God he found this absolutely hilarious and we became friends - whew! I had no idea I was such a rude drunk...but I excuse myself because I don't remember it, then I drank a beer, took some shots, told everyone at the club I was engaged so I couldn't dance with any guys, talked to some Irishmen, sat on a fence, somehow stumbled home with Molly, ate tons of cake, got a foot massage and some how managed to put myself to bed. A successful night? Yes. Just wish I could recall some of it!
So I woke up fully clothed, ate some cereal, packed, and got on a bus with Molly to NYC. Some way to spend the night after my 21st!
Of course we were the girls making mixed drinks on the bus...typical. The guy behind us was completely judging but, "it's my birthday and nothing can go wrong."
We get to NYC, check into a beautiful apartment overlooking the statue of liberty and Times square, which belonged to Molly's friend Ravi, and walked around - took some touristy pics. We then ate some street vendor food and SBarro and then the REAL fun began! After I changed into my dress and heels, oooobviously. (Ps. Won't be wearing heels for a while. A long while. Where are my Mizunos!?)
Somehow we found ourselves socially with some of the funniest people I've ever met and drinking Crystal champagne in a Limo...which followed the party bus...to various bars in NYC. We drank and danced all night with some really awesome guys and gals, but none more wonderful than my own Molly.
Unfortunately I don't recall much of this either, but apparently we had an absolute blast. And I don't doubt it! Props to Molly's friends Alex (both of them), Ravi, Ringo, etc who treated us to a fabulous birthday night...and took care of me when I eventually got sick.
Then I had to walk around NYC hungover and exhausted. But it's okay because I ate tons of greasy Chinatown food and Gyros and shopped all day.
We got on a bus at 7 that night, took the trip home, and completely passed out again...and slept until 11 on Sunday.
The next day I gave Molly the typical tour of Boston. We rode bikes to Newbury, shopped, ate at the Salty Dog, took the ferry to Bunker Hill, and saw Inception (amazing.) Then we went to Harvard Square and ate at this amazing Indian food restaurant and walked around. Then we rode bikes home in the rain/dark...
We watched Shutter Island and once again completely passed out, exhausted. We did nothing but move this week!
This morning we ate at Angora and I dropped her off at the airport. I'm so sad to see her go, knowing I wont' see her again until Thanksgiving. But she is amazing for flying all the way here and I can't believe I have friends as amazing as her.
Now it's back to the grind of work and training until ten days from now: when Chris gets home!!!

This was definitely a successful birthday. I couldn't have asked for more.

love love love,
me

Stop Shoulding all over yourself

Yesterday I went on Cor Jesu's Vivare "young alumni" retreat. My friend from high school Katie posted it on my wall a few weeks ago and tagged a couple other CJ sisters to the post and it struck my interest. I haven't done a single thing with CJ since I graduated and somewhere between moving to Boston and joining the triathlon team my Catholic past was put on the backburner. I figured I had nothing to lose except a Saturday and at the very least I'd get to hang out with my friends so I signed up and sent in my $25 without much thought.  I've never been the most devout Catholic. Most times in church I'm scanning the crowd for familiar faces, zoning out, and making Target lists- and that's if I go at all. Sunday is usually run-day...or ski day. Or sleep in day. Or study day. Or vacuum day. Whatever day it is...it's rarely church day. Despite being raised by two Catholic parents, going to a Catholic grade school and a Catholic high school, going o...

A Near Miss

I may have spoken too soon when I said that Kirkwood library was my spot. Here I am comfortably doing my speech-pathology work when out of nowhere: We took the square route of this and put it here and here and put it there and there.  My ears tuned in and I raised my head. I sniffed the air and suspiciously scanned the area. Yep. Math. Immediately I broke out in a sweat. Hands started shaking. Eyes twitched. Jaw clenched and neck twisted. Vomit literally came up my esophagus. Pavlov conditioning in it's purest form.  So this times this gives you this and this times this gives you that.  Focus, Katie. Hmm....a 2 year old with hearing loss who is struggling with some final consonant deletion, some stopping of fricatives, some devoicing? Now that, I am good at.... Now do you see inside your parenthesis that there is a difference of squares? No I don't see, lady. That past is long behind me and I'm never going back.  Right now I'm transcribing, identifying ...
First mountain bike ride = SUCCESS! Rex and I rode 18 miles this morning. We did the Logan river trail for about 14 then we rode around town stopping into some bike shops looking at pedals and mountain biking shoes. It'll be a few weeks before I actually buy a pair but I want to get an idea of what's out there - just like road cycling, clipless pedals change everything. With regular pedals, the rider can only get movement forward by pushing down. With clipless pedals, the rider's foot is attached to the bike so you can push down and pull up, which makes climbing and accelerating completely different. I absolutely love my pedals on Mr. Mac so Rex should have a pair, too. The ride was awesome though. The thing I like about mountain biking is that it's a nice blend between trail running and road cycling. You get to the distance of cycling but you get to be close with nature like you do running. It's absolutely perfect. I even had my very first crash today! I w...
