Thus far my room situation has been suprapar.
Okay I just made that word up using my recently memorized medical prefixes and suffixes. Supra means beyond and par means average so therefore:
Suprapar is beyond average. Hopefully I'm not saying like...SUPER AVERAGE! As in just about as average as you can get, but more of a better than average.
Basically I'm saying it's great.
I was a little apprehensive living with Colin, to say the least. Not that his conservative Catholic, ROTC, training-obsessed little self isn't entertaining as all hell or anything...but him and I are very different in many ways. Plus we are over competitive with each other, to say that least. And he eats weird food.
But other than those little quirks, he's clean, he takes out the trash, he's quiet, and he comes with a bike rack and trainer. He also keeps me motivated to train because lets face it, I can't stand to see him train and feel like a lazy piece.
My other roomie Cait was also a cause of concern with I first heard about her. Someone told me she attended an art institute. Not that I don't love art kids (CFA...WOO!) but when I think art student I think extremely creative, at times dark, moody, reclusive....I might wake up in the middle of the night to find her perched on my windowsill writing a poem or drawing me sleeping, saying I was serene and angelic or something.
But she's actually quite the opposite. First of all, she's a psych major - Love that! She's blonde, really cute, friendly, very quiet and shy and also, praise sweet Jesus, very clean. She always makes coffee, does the dishes, takes out the trash, doesn't leave hairs in the shower, and honestly not around that much. She doesn't eat all my food in the fridge, she is nice to my friends, she doesn't throw raging parties or play angry music that makes me want to scream or stab forks in my ears. She likes Colbie Caillat, John Mayer, and Jack Johnson. She has a regular job at a doctor's office and doesn't bring dirt onto my floors. She drinks Mojitoes with me and has an appreciation for Disney movies. She likes all the food I make and doesn't mind when I have the boys over - even though I know we're loud and obnoxious at times. She writes on paper with little animals on it and has a pink coffee mug. Her comforter is white and she really doesn't have any decorations on the walls. She doesn't check up on me or listen in on my conversations and she doesn't pry, but she listens when I vent about work or training or class. She asks if I need anything at the store when she goes, and politely I always decline - except for once when he needed coffee filters. She laughs at my dumb jokes. She lets me know where she's going if she's going to be gone for more than a couple hours and always remembers to lock the doors. She changed the toilet paper and bought eggs and milk.
She's probably the most normal person I've ever come across. She's the absolute perfect roommate.
I'm not sure if we'll be best friends or what not just because we're both always in opposite directions...but I actually like having her around. It's more of a comfortable co-existence between two people who are both in Boston for the summer.

I really love this apartment. I love the stained floors, collapsing couch, and creaking doors. I like that the windows don't lock and the curtains don't close all the way - or when you do close them they won't open. I like the stained walls and all the random holes everywhere. The hallway is permanently stained and always smells of cigarettes or weed. But the motley crew furniture, the friendly bugs and dump trucks that wake me up every single morning at 5 am never fail to make me smile. I like my full size bed and half size kitchen. My toilet is lose and rocks back and forth when I sit on it and sometimes it refuses to flush, or flushes on its own. The heat kicks on randomly and the hot water pipe in the bathroom makes it a sauna every night. I can never get the kitchen floors back to their original luster and I have to prepare all food on the stove because the counter is covered with the dishes and 2 coffee makers.
I'm not quite sure what it is, but I've been here less than 2 weeks and this apartment feels more like home than my dorm ever did.

Stop Shoulding all over yourself

Yesterday I went on Cor Jesu's Vivare "young alumni" retreat. My friend from high school Katie posted it on my wall a few weeks ago and tagged a couple other CJ sisters to the post and it struck my interest. I haven't done a single thing with CJ since I graduated and somewhere between moving to Boston and joining the triathlon team my Catholic past was put on the backburner. I figured I had nothing to lose except a Saturday and at the very least I'd get to hang out with my friends so I signed up and sent in my $25 without much thought.  I've never been the most devout Catholic. Most times in church I'm scanning the crowd for familiar faces, zoning out, and making Target lists- and that's if I go at all. Sunday is usually run-day...or ski day. Or sleep in day. Or study day. Or vacuum day. Whatever day it is...it's rarely church day. Despite being raised by two Catholic parents, going to a Catholic grade school and a Catholic high school, going o...

A Near Miss

I may have spoken too soon when I said that Kirkwood library was my spot. Here I am comfortably doing my speech-pathology work when out of nowhere: We took the square route of this and put it here and here and put it there and there.  My ears tuned in and I raised my head. I sniffed the air and suspiciously scanned the area. Yep. Math. Immediately I broke out in a sweat. Hands started shaking. Eyes twitched. Jaw clenched and neck twisted. Vomit literally came up my esophagus. Pavlov conditioning in it's purest form.  So this times this gives you this and this times this gives you that.  Focus, Katie. Hmm....a 2 year old with hearing loss who is struggling with some final consonant deletion, some stopping of fricatives, some devoicing? Now that, I am good at.... Now do you see inside your parenthesis that there is a difference of squares? No I don't see, lady. That past is long behind me and I'm never going back.  Right now I'm transcribing, identifying ...
First mountain bike ride = SUCCESS! Rex and I rode 18 miles this morning. We did the Logan river trail for about 14 then we rode around town stopping into some bike shops looking at pedals and mountain biking shoes. It'll be a few weeks before I actually buy a pair but I want to get an idea of what's out there - just like road cycling, clipless pedals change everything. With regular pedals, the rider can only get movement forward by pushing down. With clipless pedals, the rider's foot is attached to the bike so you can push down and pull up, which makes climbing and accelerating completely different. I absolutely love my pedals on Mr. Mac so Rex should have a pair, too. The ride was awesome though. The thing I like about mountain biking is that it's a nice blend between trail running and road cycling. You get to the distance of cycling but you get to be close with nature like you do running. It's absolutely perfect. I even had my very first crash today! I w...
