Finito

MY PAPER IS TURNED IN!!!! My baby, my 60 page research/policy paper on China's currency policy and current economic situation is officially finished and in for grading. Three weeks ago I had absolutely no idea how I was going to tackle this insane beast, but, like most things, on the other side of the hill and looking back...it wasn't that bad. It's just one of those things you take one day at a time and just sit down, and do what needs to be done. I find a lot of issues are like this: if you just break them apart, it's not terrible or unimaginable. If I got too ahead of myself and started thinking about how I had SIXTY pages to write, I found myself hyperventilating in the corner. But if I thought: okay the intro is 4 pages, the actual policy is 16, that's 20 right there...that means 40 on history and building my case...so then say 10 pages on history of China and how it relates to present and 20 on current issues: 10 with the United States in particular and then 10 on the rest of the world....etc, etc, etc.
So then it really became a bunch of smaller research papers within one big research paper - much more manageable. And even, dare I say, enjoyable?
The countless nights in the library, the 3 am research parties, the reading over breakfast/lunch/dinner...it was all thought about it. I ate, slept, and breathed China. Now, I will never love China as much as I love Russia, but just the same, it's communism so of course I will always find it fascinating.
This was an insane task, but honestly, I kept my head on straight and kept to my schedule and in the end, my finished product is nothing short of phenomenal.
And I never have to research China ever, ever, ever again.

..now I just have my two hour oral defense on Monday at 9 a.m...not a big deal, I can handle this.

love love love,
me

  1. haha you're in cgs right? capstone is split between 6 people...so you had to write...what like 10 pages? and the paper is only 50 pages - wow thats interesting that you would write that...

  2. Well..split that between my other class, my research at Harvard, my part time job, my 2 hours of triathlon training a day, and dean's host, and suddenly it becomes a little less manageable than you would think.
The sarcastic little comment to bring yourself up by putting me down isn't appreciated, though. If you don't like what I have to say, don't read my blog..and certainly don't comment on it.
    Much love,

  3. normally i don’t read this kind of thing, but since you advertise it on facebook so much i thought i’d check it out. besides how was that comment supposed to make me feel better? i was just confused about why you’d lie about your life in your own blog. and i think that writing an entire entry about a comment that was just pointing out something that’s not true is even more immature than writing any “sarcastic little comment”. either way, i’m glad you have the responsibilities of most kids our age, welcome to college life.
    love love love,

  4. I didn't lie, the project was a hard one and something I worked really hard on. Sorry for the spite though, it's been a stressful week and I got a little offensive, but I see what you mean. The whole entry wasn't just about your comment, I didn't mean it to be direct at you. It's just something I've been seeing a lot lately with me and some of my friends...
Hopefully you like my other posts more than this one, though.

Ps. Not going to lie, it's makes me happy you come back and read my blog more than once =) Maybe I'm doing something right.

Stop Shoulding all over yourself

Yesterday I went on Cor Jesu's Vivare "young alumni" retreat. My friend from high school Katie posted it on my wall a few weeks ago and tagged a couple other CJ sisters to the post and it struck my interest. I haven't done a single thing with CJ since I graduated and somewhere between moving to Boston and joining the triathlon team my Catholic past was put on the backburner. I figured I had nothing to lose except a Saturday and at the very least I'd get to hang out with my friends so I signed up and sent in my $25 without much thought.  I've never been the most devout Catholic. Most times in church I'm scanning the crowd for familiar faces, zoning out, and making Target lists- and that's if I go at all. Sunday is usually run-day...or ski day. Or sleep in day. Or study day. Or vacuum day. Whatever day it is...it's rarely church day. Despite being raised by two Catholic parents, going to a Catholic grade school and a Catholic high school, going o...

A Near Miss

I may have spoken too soon when I said that Kirkwood library was my spot. Here I am comfortably doing my speech-pathology work when out of nowhere: We took the square route of this and put it here and here and put it there and there.  My ears tuned in and I raised my head. I sniffed the air and suspiciously scanned the area. Yep. Math. Immediately I broke out in a sweat. Hands started shaking. Eyes twitched. Jaw clenched and neck twisted. Vomit literally came up my esophagus. Pavlov conditioning in it's purest form.  So this times this gives you this and this times this gives you that.  Focus, Katie. Hmm....a 2 year old with hearing loss who is struggling with some final consonant deletion, some stopping of fricatives, some devoicing? Now that, I am good at.... Now do you see inside your parenthesis that there is a difference of squares? No I don't see, lady. That past is long behind me and I'm never going back.  Right now I'm transcribing, identifying ...
First mountain bike ride = SUCCESS! Rex and I rode 18 miles this morning. We did the Logan river trail for about 14 then we rode around town stopping into some bike shops looking at pedals and mountain biking shoes. It'll be a few weeks before I actually buy a pair but I want to get an idea of what's out there - just like road cycling, clipless pedals change everything. With regular pedals, the rider can only get movement forward by pushing down. With clipless pedals, the rider's foot is attached to the bike so you can push down and pull up, which makes climbing and accelerating completely different. I absolutely love my pedals on Mr. Mac so Rex should have a pair, too. The ride was awesome though. The thing I like about mountain biking is that it's a nice blend between trail running and road cycling. You get to the distance of cycling but you get to be close with nature like you do running. It's absolutely perfect. I even had my very first crash today! I w...
